Genuine Japanese filter matting is a very popular biological filtration media traditionally used in Koi ponds. It’s often used in sumps and external aquarium filters as well. It offers a huge amount of surface for filtration bacteria and tends to clog up less than many foams. These mats can be cut to size.
Due to its coarse nature japanese matting (sometimes called jap mat) has excellent bio-mass retention and its open texture removes larger particles from the pond water. It is a very efficient mechanical and biological filtration media which is long lasting and durable.
